Obituary

Bertha Marguerite Whitcroft (née Stimson) of Lucknow passed away at Pinecrest Manor on Wednesday February 18, 2026 at the age of 97.  She was born on September 14, 1928, at the family farmhouse on the 4th Concession of Kinloss Township. Predeceased by her parents, Margaret Ann (MacKenzie) and William Stimson, and by her brothers Calvin, William, and Donald.

She is lovingly remembered by her son David Lougheed and daughter-in-law Sally of Grafton, Ontario; her daughter Margaret Ann Whitcroft of St. Marys, Ontario; and her son Michael Whitcroft (Linda Sharpin) of Lucknow. She is also survived by her granddaughter Nicole Magnish of Sarnia; her grandson Matthew Rogers and his wife Natalie, her great-grandchildren Alice and Xavier, all of Arnaud, Manitoba; and her niece Mary Sommers (Tim) of Kitchener.

After graduating high school in the late 1940s, Bertha attended secretarial school in Toronto and began her career with Davis & Henderson, serving as secretary to the president. Following the death of her mother, she returned to Lucknow to care for her father. Over the years, she was a Brownie leader in Lucknow, a member of the Lucknow Legion Ladies Auxiliary, worked at the Log Cabin Restaurant as a waitress, and later held office manager positions at the Lucknow Furniture Factory and Silverwood’s Ice Cream and Butter Manufacturing in Lucknow. She retired after 28 years as Clerk-Treasurer of the Village of Lucknow.

Bertha never asked for much in life beyond the happiness of her family. She worked tirelessly, both during the day and after hours, to ensure her family felt loved and cared for, making the most of what they had each day. She supported her children in all of their endeavours and was highly respected in the community for her integrity, professionalism, and dedication.

In keeping with her wishes, Bertha will be cremated and laid to rest at South Kinloss Cemetery. A come and go Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday March 15, 2026 at the Lucknow Legion from 2-4 PM.

Michael, David, Margaret Ann and the entire family circle, we are so sorry to hear of Bertha's passing. Sending our sincerest condolences at this sad and difficult time. Growing up across the road from the Whitcroft family on Stauffer street brings back many cherished memories. Some of our earliest connections go back to when mom-"Joycee," as Michael often called her- babysat Michael and Jody. From those early days onward, Bertha was a steady, welcoming presence, always greeting us with a friendly smile and endless patience despite our daily intrusions. We spent countless hours at the Whitcrofts, playing baseball and football on their large lot, imagining we were our NHL idols on their homemade ice rink, engaging in non-injurious bike tag, and building dams and catching snakes in the river. Gathering in the garage for marathon APBA baseball dice games was simply a part of growing up. David introduced us to Elton John and Alice Cooper, and we roamed the neighbourhood to star in Director David's homemade movies like "Hunt in the Jungle", and "Nuclear Waste Monster". "Joe Montana" playing football on the street at 2:00 a.m., or "Evil Knievel" attempting to clear the Lucknow river on a bicycle have always brought us a few chuckles as we reminisce. Please know that all of us in the Dennis family are holding you close in our thoughts. Bertha helped shape a neighbourhood where kids could play, roam, imagine, and grow, and her warmth stayed with us long after those childhood days ended. We are grateful for her, and for all the years our families shared across that little stretch of road. Sincerely Joy, Jody, and Mike Dennis

Bertha was a great neighbour of ours on Stauffer Street. And she was always ready for a chat and catch up even after we moved away. As clerk treasurer she was a wealth of information and questions were consistently answered with a smile. We are thinking of you all as you celebrate Bertha's special life.

Michael, Margaret Ann & David We were so sorry to hear of Bertha's passing. I have lots of great memories of Bertha while growing up in town, always a smile and a chat. I remember the first time I stopped in and asked if "Zip" was home and she said "don't you mean Michael". I never call you Zip again when talking with your mom. She was a great lady! Our condolences. Our deepest sympathy to all of Berthas family .. she loved and worked hard for her community . When I was on council we depended on Bertha for everything,,efficient with info always at her fingertips.. I remember when she proposed to council she really really needed a fax machine to make her job quicker and easier,, we had to think long and hard to justify $900 for a new such item to justify taxpayers money spent,, what a luxury,,,,May she rest in peace,, she deserves her eternal rest
