Obituary

George Bushell of Kitchener passed away peacefully on June 21, 2023 in his 81st year.
Beloved husband of Joanne (nee Crozier) for over 57 years.  Loving father of David (Mary Lou) and son-in-law Roy MacNeil.  Proud grandfather of Delaney, Sarah, and Katie.  Predeceased by his daughter Janet MacNeil and by his sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Doug Fraser.

A long time resident of Ottawa (Blackburn Hamlet) George was very active serving on the Blackburn Community Association Executive, the Gloucester Planning Committee and for thirty-four years the President of the Gloucester Allotment Gardens where he could always be found gardening, digging ditches, or erecting deer fence. He frequently gave gardening presentations to Horticultural Societies in Eastern Ontario and was a great supporter of the Canadian Organic Growers - Ottawa Chapter. George also enjoyed camping and travelling with his family and poker and breakfasts with the guys. He will always be remembered for his watermelon tasting parties at his home.

A Memorial service will be held at the MacKenzie & McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow, on Wednesday July 5, 2023 at 1 PM with interment to follow at Greenhill Cemetery.

I was happy to have worked with George on his ORCA and ORCA Health applications (Operational Research and Criteria Analysis; not the killer whale). We worked together via 'Netmeeting' years befor it became the norm to collaborate online. Years earlier I found a document written by George on the topic of VTS in the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the geography graduate student room at UVic. It planted a seed which turned into my masters thesis and a career in marine accident research and investigation. Thank you George and my condolences to your family at your loss.

I was George’supervisor in Geography at the U of T. He was one the best student I encountered during my long career in geography. His masters thesis was exceptional. I am sorry for your loss. It appears he led a full and positive life.

We have many happy memories of George: Birding together. We particularly remember the time the RCMP told us to "move along" when we were trying to observer grasshopper sparrows in a restricted area!. Watermelon parties, with voting on the best watermelons and cantaloupes, along with homemade wine. Conversations on special relativity and climate change at the Walker's carol sing. George enjoyed this more than the singing! George's lecture on plants at one of Joan's Monarch Teachers Network workshops. He took everyone on a walking tour behind Carine Wilson Highschool identifying every plant we came across! We have missed him since his move to Southern Ontario. We are saddened that we will never see him again. Joan and Dan

Joanne and Family, We extend our deepest sympathy to you on the death of George, a special husband and father. Looking back to our years at Lucknow District High School brings many fond memories. When there was a Physics or Algebra problem that needed solving. George could always be counted on to find the solution. Treasure your memories of the time shared with him. Thinking of you.
